Emergency Communication

A very important part of the ICAO language test requires the knowledge of emergency communication. Moreover, the CBT (Computer Based Test) also includes questions about individual opinions.

The term "emergency messages" subsumes the so-called "distress" and "urgency" call. Accordingly, both message types are considered as emergency messages.

An "Emergency Message" is initiated with the proper RTF prefix

  1. PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN or MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY
  2. name of the station addressed
  3. call-sign
  4. nature of the emergency
  5. pilot’s intentions
  6. the present position, level and heading
  7. supporting information such as fuel endurance and persons on board
